Leather Bound Books - Case Study

Condolence Books

Every year we produce dozens of high quality bespoke books such as these.  These can be Hospital Admissions Books, Theatre Registers, Visitors Books and Condolence Books.  The books are covered in leather (pigskin grain) and are gold foil blocked and blind tooled on the front.  The boards are 7000 micron!  There are marbled endpapers which are reinforced down the joints with buckram for added strength, and are stiff-leaved to the first and last pages.  The pages themselves are Papago cream 120g and are printed black and blue.  If the books are Registers each page will be numbered.  The pages are section sewn and have blue sprinkled edges.  The really clever bit is the ‘spring-back’ spine which is rounded but not backed, having instead a spring-back, which, in conjunction with levers, causes the spine of the book to “spring” up when the book is opened, thus giving full access to the gutter of the opposing pages.  Below is a far more detailed description of the technique.
